reading class

I have enjoyed being in reading class.  I have learned to read a lot better, and have found myself reading a whole lot more .  I forgot just how much I really enjoy reading, when I can find the time to do it.   I have learned how to annitate my reading, something I have never really used very often in any of my studies.  I have really enjoyed having you as a teacher Stephanie.  I think you are a very cool person to have as a teacher. I felt very comfortable in your class.   I wish that I could of kept up with my studies in your class like I should have.   I was just so over welmed with all of my other classes that I found myself slacking in yours.   I now have learned that I need to not bite off more than I can handle but still need to push myself to see just how far I can go and try to acchieve the things in life that I have wanted to.   I really enjoyed some of the homework that you gave us and some of it I didn't.   I really enjoyed the books that you had us read for the class.   I found myself not being able to put them down at times, even my friend Beth wants to read what I read in class.   I hope you have a nice summer and hope to see you again, maybe in another class.

Precious/Push

I found the book Precious to be quite nerving in the sense I felt very sorry for the character Precious in this story.   All the heart pulling struggles she had to go thru.   This story has a lot harsh and vulgar wording in it and very dramatic scenes to read.   Practically almost every page I have read I have found myself feeling sorry for her.  I did not like how Precious was treated by her mother.   I did not like that she was being taken advantage of by her mother just so she could stay on welfare instead of letting Precious be able to get it for her and her own child.   I hated how she was beat by her mother and how she made Precious's baby go live with her grandmother instead of letting Precious try to raise her on her own.   I also did not like the way Precious's mother let her father rape her, causing her to become pregnant with two of his children.   This made my own skin crawl because of my own experience of being molested by my stepfather at about the same age as Precious was by hers, and why her own mother did not try to put a stop to it.   I did not like the way she felt and described her first baby girl mongo.  that name was not very nice to give her and her mother should had loved her enough to not let her name her baby that.   I know what it feels liketo have a child with Down Syndrome.   My own 19 year old son andrew has it.   Even though he has a mild case of it , I still rather have a hard time dealing with it emotionally.   I did like that she still tryed to keep her head up through it all and found a little peace when she was at school trying to learn something.   Sometimes I myself find a little peace for myself by going to school and escaping the pressures of my home life, if only for a couple of hours a day.

"SOLD" 4

In the book sold, the character Lakshmi is very worthy of my praise.   She was just only a little girl going through a lot experiences that she should never of had to face til she was much older in life.   Having to go from having a family to going to live in a brothel and feeling so alone to face the things she did head on with out the knoweldge of what was going and did happen to her.   I have to commend her for her bravery.   I have to critise her mother Alma for putting her daughter in such a predictament in her life.  Letting her stepfather take her and sell her in to prostitution.   I think she should have got off her butt in the book and found a way to take care of her family better than she was doing.    The stepfather I feel needs to be criticised for what he did to her because I myself was hurt by my own stepfather and know what it feels like to be betrayed by a person you love.  He should have found a better way to deal with the problem they were having.   He could of at least quit drinking and gambleling so his family could at least survive without taking such a drastic measure.   I feel the mean lady Muntaz that bought Lakshmi needs to be criticised very harshly.   The way she treated Lakshmi and the other girls in this story was very horrible and she should have been beatin heself for the way she beat and starved and pushed them to have sex with strange men the way she did. Taking away their innocense and self respect the way she did is a crime I feel can not be forgiven lightly by any one.   I feel the Americans in this story deserve my praise because it took a lot of bravery for them to go into a place like this and try to save the women and children from this crime that was occurring to them.  They alone could have been caught and the outcome could have been quite bad for the people they were trying to save.

sold blog 3

The story so far about this little girl named Lakshimi has been quite interresting to me so much I all most finished the book to quickly for class.   This poor little girl has gone through a lot of trials and tribulations.   She was sold by her stepfather in to the sex ring for money, for her family.   She had no idea what was going to happen to her, or prepared for it either.  She was led to believe that she was going to go to work for some rich person cleaning their home and being their made for other things,  She had no idea that she was being sold into the sex ring and how bad it was just going to be for her.  She was made to walk far away through many villages before they took any kind of transpotation to where they were taking her.   When she got there she was sold to this lady named Mumtaz for 10,000 rupees.   She was a innocent little girl til this cruel lady bought her.   She was forced to have sex with this old man causing her to loose her virgenity at the age of 13.   She attacked the man and bit him for trying to hurt her.   she tried to run away but was caught my Mumtaz and beat severly for it.  she beat her with a strapp from head to toe, leaving strapp marks all over her whole body.  Mumtaz locked her in a room for a few days no food or water, til she promised to comply.
She cut off all of her beautiful hair as a way to disgrace her for trying to run away.   This is a form of punishment that they do there to punish the women who run away from their husbands or owners and get caught.  To me I find this very disgraceful and wrong.  Lakshmi finds herself looking in a mirror at a little girl that has been forced to become a older woman before her time.  She does however manage to make friends with the other girls there and a little boy that teaches her how to read, write and talk the language there.  I feel so sorry for this little girl being force to pay this kind of debt and loosing herself in the prossess of it.

SOLD

The name of the second book I chose to read is called SOLD.   It is written by Patrica McCormick.   It has a national book award finalist sticker on it.   A Quil Award winner, and An ALA Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults.   Copy writed in 2006.  I chose this book because it is about this young 13 year old girl named Lakshmi, who was sold into the prostitution ring, that just happen to take place around this world all the time.  It also  happens a lot in the third world countries because they are so poor they have no other means of supporting their families other than to have there children go and do this sort of horendious crime that takes place against there childs innosence.   I myself find that this is a awful crime against the children of this world and very much needs to be stopped.   I think that the parents ought to be put in jail and so should the people that do this sort of crime against a child.  It is moraly wrong in my book.   I hate to say this sometimes but I admit it. because as a child I was molested and my heart aches to see it happen to any child in this world.  I would never do that to my children, I would die first and take them with me just to protect them from this awful world out there like that.   The story takes place in a small village in Nepal, in the Himalayan Mountains, of India.   Lalshmi's family is dirt poor.   They live in a small mud and straw shack, that has a roof that leaks and a dirt floor.  Her stepfather can not work because he has a crippled arm and her mother Ama doen't work.  her Stepfather is a gambler and spends his time with the old men in the village drinking and gambleing away  most of their money.  The family tries desperately to plant rice patty crops but alot of it gets destoyed by the monsoon season there.  this causes her stepfather to sell her into the prostitution ring, to provide for their family.   She has one baby brother named and a goat named Tali, she had four other siblings but they all died as babies.  Most of the babies die there because of the poverty level.

So far in this book I am finding out that micah is telling a whole lot of lies.  I am learning that she gets her lieng side from her father.   His job seems to require to tell his opinion and sometimes it is not always the truth.  he even goes far as to lie to the limo driver about boxing.
